91st Lorried Infantry Brigade
11th Armoured Division |
| B.A.O.R. Goslar
Germany |
| Goslar was an
attractive old town surrounded on three sides by spurs of the Harz
Mountains, not far from Bad Harzburg which at that time was a Rhine Army
Leave centre. The Battalion found itself in an old Luftwaffe station in a
location that was well spread out. The Battalion was a unit of the 91st
Lorried Infantry Brigade of the 11th Armoured Division. Like all B.A.O.R.
postings much time was spent on various exercises, both locally and at Sennelager, a location which became
familiar to the 'Farmersboys' a
generation later. The Battalion enjoyed much success as one of the top
Machinegun Battalions in B.A.O.R.
In May 1955 the Bonn treaty was ratified which meant
that troops in B.A.O.R. were no longer classed as being on 'Active
Service'. All in all the Battalion enjoyed a good posting to Goslar, and
it was a high honour to be selected as the Major unit on the Queens
Birthday Parade in Hanover which took place on the 9th June 1955.
It is hoped that the
following images will bring back memories to any Royal Berkshire man who
served in the battalion at that time. If anyone has any further images
from this or any other posting we will gladly display them. |
