The ROYAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE, BERKSHIRE and
WILTSHIRE REGIMENT
|
THE REGIMENTS BATTLE HONOURS AND COLOURS
|
| A quick reference point for anybody making a study of any
Regiments history is to examine the colours of that Regiment paying
particular attention to the Battle Honours. This will give the researcher a good starting point in establishing the Regiments involvement in
battles and campaigns of yesteryear.
The whole question of the award of Battle Honours abounds in anomalies.
Paltry skirmishes have been immortalized, and many gallant fights have
been left unrecorded. In some cases certain corps have been singled out
for honour, others which bore an equal share in the same days doings have been
denied the privilege of assuming the Battle Honour. In some campaigns every skirmish has been handed down to posterity, in others one word has
covered long years of fighting. A good example of years of sustained campaigning
and hardship is the American War of Independence which all of our former
Regiments participated in, and which resulted in no Battle Honors being awarded.
The Battle Honours carried today come from all the previous component
parts of our Regimental family, The numbered Regiments, The named
Regiments that followed, The Territorial
Army, Service Battalions of Kitcheners War raised Battalions, and War
raised units, disbanded on completion of hostilities. The Colours are a
living memorial to all the Soldiers who served, fought and died.
Our objective on this page is to draw the historical threads together
from all the participating units and to tell the story of our Regiments involvement
in these battles and Campaigns.
This site will take some time to construct as we are
also putting together a Battle honour time line which will be inserted
when near completion. |
